Women For Women International Announces Fall 2008 Run For Congo Women Dates
Washington, D.C (PRWEB) September 10, 2008 -- Registration is currently open for the Fall 2008 Run for Congo Women events. Run for Congo Women is a grassroots run or walk that is dedicated to supporting women survivors of war in Democratic Republic of the Congo. This mobilization of support for women in DR Congo is evidence of the collective strength of the global women's movement.
Proceeds from the events benefit women in DR Congo who choose to take their own first steps from victims to survivors to active citizens by participating in Women for Women International's program of direct financial aid and emotional support, rights awareness education, job skills training and agribusiness and small business assistance.
In 2005, Women for Women International supporter Lisa Shannon decided to run 30 miles in Portland, Oregon to raise money to help women in DR Congo. "More than anything, I was just shocked that the deadliest war since World War II is happening and I had never heard of it" said Lisa Shannon. She raised more than $25,000, enough money to sponsor 80 women during their year in Women for Women International's program. "Even though I didn't know how to end the war in Congo, I thought that if I could just focus on one simple thing that I could do, that I could make a difference." Since then, thousands of people have joined her in taking direct action to support women in DR Congo who are rebuilding their lives, families and communities in the wake of conflict and unthinkable violence.
The war in DR Congo was one of the deadliest in Africa's history. Millions died and new tensions threaten an already fragile peace every day. For women in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, brutal gang rape and torture continue to be a daily reality, even as 60-80% of women have become single heads of household, with their families' survival dependent on their ability to generate an income.
One woman at a time, runners and supporter are working to change that deadly reality. Run for Congo Women will be coming to following cities:
